Strawberry Cornbread

To celebrate Lughnasadh I made strawberry cornbread muffins. They turned out delicious, made with the fresh strawberries that were so ripe that I needed to use them immediately. Baking something at home is a great way to celebrate this first harvest festival. Zucchini bread is another great choice if you have lots of zucchini coming from the garden these days.

Lughnasadh is a Gaelic festival marking the beginning of the harvest season. Historically, it was widely observed throughout Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man. Traditionally it is held on 1 August, or about halfway between the summer solstice and autumn equinox. Lughnasadh is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals, along with Samhain, Imbolc and Beltane. It corresponds to other European harvest festivals such as the Welsh Gŵyl Awst and the English Lammas. Lammas Day (Anglo-Saxon hlaf-mas, “loaf-mass”), also known as Loaf Mass Day, holiday celebrated August 1st. The name originates from the word “loaf” in reference to bread and “mass” or ceremony. It is a festival to mark the blessing of the first harvest, with a loaf of bread baked and blessed.
